Police have confirmed that one person died after suspected hoodlums attacked supporters welcoming politician and broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat back to Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, October 14.
The victim, 40-year-old Azeez Tajudeen, suffered a severe injury to his right eye and was confirmed dead at the State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan. His body was taken to the hospital morgue, police said.
Oyo police spokesperson DSP Olayinka Ayanlade said the group was attacked shortly after leaving Molete while heading towards Iwo Road, where Agidigbo FM is located, according to Channels Television. Daily Post described the group as the Accord Party governorship candidate’s campaign team.
Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga has directed the Command Monitoring Unit to investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice, Channels Television reported.
The command asked anyone with useful information to assist the investigation. It also urged political aspirants, party leaders and event organisers to give police at least 48 hours’ notice before processions or public gatherings so security arrangements can be made.
