Five people were seriously injured when a 40-foot truck hit two commercial buses at Berger Bus Stop on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said.

The crash happened on the outward route towards Kara Bridge, shortly after 1pm, Channels Television reported. It involved a HOWO truck, an interstate Mazda bus and a Toyota Hiace bus.

LASTMA said the injured passengers were three women and two men, including a driver. They were taken to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at Toll Gate for treatment.

The agency said its operatives rescued the victims with support from personnel attached to Isheri Police Station. Daily Post reported that volunteer motorists helped transport them to the emergency centre.

Channels Television quoted an FRSC official at the scene as saying the truck suffered brake failure. The vehicles were handed over to the police for investigation into the circumstances of the collision.

Traffic queues stretched back to Otedola Bridge. LASTMA said its officers removed the truck and both buses from the carriageway to prevent further accidents and restore traffic flow.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki urged heavy-duty vehicle operators to carry out regular maintenance and ensure their vehicles were roadworthy.
