Anambra Attorney General sets up inquiry into police-bailiffs confrontation
Anambra’s Attorney General Tobechukwu Nweke has set up a fact-finding committee to investigate the confrontation between police officers and court bailiffs enforcing a court order.
The committee will examine the circumstances of the encounter and submit a report to the Attorney General.
Director of Public Prosecutions Nneka Umeozulu announced the inquiry in a Friday statement on Nweke’s behalf, Punch reported.
She said the ministry had received a circulating video, statements attributed to people believed to be bailiffs, and complaints alleging offences arising from the incident.
NaijaTrend previously reported the encounter and the police and Nigerian Bar Association accounts here. The NBA alleged harassment of officials carrying out a court order; police said officers responded to a disturbance and withdrew after learning that the officials were bailiffs.
Umeozulu asked those involved to remain calm and wait for the investigation to conclude.
