Army activates 28 Armoured Brigade and new formations in Kebbi
The Nigerian Army has activated the 28 Armoured Brigade and Garrison in Birnin Kebbi, alongside two other formations in Kebbi State.
The new structure includes the 281 Tank Battalion in Yauri and the 381 Artillery Regiment in Kaoje. The Army said the deployments are meant to strengthen command, widen its presence and improve response time to security threats in the North-West.
Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu was represented at the event by Maj. Gen. Bemgba Koughna, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander of Sector 2, Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
Koughna asked the acting commander of the 28 Brigade, Col. Abdullahi Umar, to ensure the formation provides fire-support capacity for operations within the division’s area of responsibility. He also told troops to remain professional, follow the rules of engagement and protect civilians and property during operations.
The Army said cooperation with other security agencies, traditional institutions and local communities would be needed to sustain peace in affected areas. During the visit, Koughna also commiserated with residents of Jandutse community after a resident was killed in a recent bandit attack and said the Army would increase its presence there.
