Five miners killed, two injured in Plateau mining-site attack
Five miners have been killed and two others injured after gunmen attacked a mining site in Marit village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack happened around 1pm on Saturday while the miners were at the site. The Berom Youth Moulders-Association said the killings had again left communities in the area mourning and called for stronger protection for residents.
Punch and Daily Trust both reported the Marit attack, with the same toll of five dead and two injured. Channels Television also reported a wider round of violence in Plateau, saying at least seven people, including miners, had been killed in separate attacks within two days and that farmlands were destroyed in affected communities.
The reports said the latest killings came amid continuing tension in parts of Barkin Ladi and neighbouring communities, where residents have repeatedly raised concerns about attacks on farmers, miners and travellers.
